Medically known as abdominoplasty, tummy tuck surgery is an aesthetic surgical procedure in which excess fat and skin tissue are removed from the abdominal area, and the abdominal muscles are tightened. It is usually performed to correct sagging caused by pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging.

The results achieved with tummy tuck surgery are generally permanent. However, this depends on the patient maintaining weight control after the operation and avoiding factors such as pregnancy, which can affect the abdominal structure. In individuals who maintain a healthy lifestyle, the results are more likely to last longer.
The surgical incision is usually made so that it can be hidden in the bikini line. The scar is initially prominent but fades over time. Proper scar care (creams, silicone tapes, etc.) and following your doctor's recommendations can greatly reduce the visibility of the scar.
Patients can usually return to light daily activities within 1 week. However, it is recommended to wait 4–6 weeks before engaging in heavy lifting or intense physical activities such as sports. Regular use of a compression garment and not missing follow-up appointments will speed up the recovery process.
The most important step before surgery is to assess the patient's abdominal structure, skin elasticity, and general health status. Blood tests, ECG, and chest imaging are performed. Additionally, smoking should be stopped before surgery, and supplements that may thin the blood should be avoided.
The physician discusses expectations for after the surgery, the placement of scars, and any potential complications that could arise during the process with the patient in detail. This period is very important for establishing a relationship of trust between the patient and the doctor.
Tummy tuck surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 2–4 hours. The surgeon makes an incision in the lower abdomen. Excess skin and fat tissue are removed, and the abdominal muscles are brought together to create a flatter abdominal contour. If needed, liposuction can also be combined with the procedure.
The belly button may also be reshaped. At the end of the surgery, drains are usually placed; these help remove excess fluid from the body.
The recovery process after tummy tuck surgery can vary from person to person. It is normal to experience mild pain, swelling, and bruising for a few days after the operation. During this period, the painkillers and antibiotics prescribed by your doctor will help you have a more comfortable recovery. Drains are usually removed within 3–5 days. Patients often return to daily life within a week, but heavy exercise should be avoided for several weeks.
Tummy tuck surgery can help you achieve a flatter, fitter, and more aesthetically pleasing abdominal area by correcting sagging and the appearance of excess skin. A good preoperative preparation, choosing an experienced and reliable surgeon, and paying attention to your doctor's recommendations after the procedure will ensure successful and lasting results.
